Widening roads does not help congestion. There is what is called the induced demand, meaning that more cars on the road are caused by wider roads. TxDOT knows this but habits are hard to change. We must spend our funds on bike infrastructure with safe, separated bike lanes which will encourage citizens to bike to work rather than taking their car. Also, 50% of car trips are under 3 miles, going to the grocery store, dropping off kids to school etc. There is no reason why we can't foster separated bike lanes to these locations to further decrease the cars on the road. Building protected, separated bike lanes from hotels to Kyle field. White paint on the road is not enough. Bikes should not be treated like cars. Children should have safe bike lanes to travel from home to school rather than relying on the school bus. The culture of TxDOT needs to change.
